November 27th – 29th Sweetgrass Basket Weaving: A Lowcountry Art form

Program Description: Sweetgrass basket making has been part of the Charleston and

Mount Pleasant communities for than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, Sweetgrass basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation. Today it is one of the oldest art forms of African Suburb on the north side of the Charleston Harbor and enjoys the distinction of being one of the only places where this art is practiced.

During the weekend, guided by Barbara McCormick, who has more than 50 years of experience, you will learn the art of Sweetgrass basket weaving. The materials used will include but not limited to sweetgrass, bulrush, long leaf pine needles and Palmetto leaves.  

You will leave the weekend with two beautiful baskets you’ve created. All materials used are natural.

You will also have time to relax and explore Springbank’s beautiful trails, stroll the 12 Step Path, walk the Cosmic Walk or Labyrinth for guidance and inspiration or sit under Grandmother Tree’s peaceful branches.

Starts at 11 am on 27th and ends on 29th with lunch at 12.30pm
